I Wore My Hair System in Bali for 6 Days - Here's Exactly What Happened
Five nights in Bali. Two kids under eight. Thirty-five degree heat. Multiple swims a day, long walks hunting down the best sunset spot, beach club afternoons, and a hat I rarely wanted to reach for.
If you've ever wondered whether a hair system can handle a proper tropical family holiday, not a gentle stroll on a mild afternoon, but the full chaos of travelling with young children in serious heat, this is that test. I'm Benny, founder of Liberty Hair Co. and a hair system wearer for several years. I wore one for all of it. Here's exactly how it went.
The setup - what I did before I even packed a bag
Two days before the flight, I put the system on and got my hair cut. This is not optional in my opinion, it is one of the best things you can do before any trip to a hot, humid climate.
The reason is simple: a fresh bond needs time to cure before you throw it into extreme conditions. Putting a system on the night before a holiday and then stepping into Bali humidity the next morning is asking for trouble. Give it 48 hours to settle, and you're starting the trip with a bond that has already had a chance to firm up properly.
The haircut at the same time means everything looks fresh from day one! No growing it out on holiday, no awkward in-between length. You arrive looking good and you don't have to think about it again.
The system and adhesive I chose and why
I made a deliberate choice to use an older system for this trip. It was a 0.04mm ultra-thin poly skin system that was already 2–3 months into its life, still in good shape, but not something I was precious about. Taking an older system on holiday is genuinely freeing. The moment you stop worrying about damaging your system is the moment you actually enjoy your holiday. I wanted to swim without thinking about it. I wanted to sit in full sun without constantly thinking about UV exposure. Using a system I was already planning to retire gave me that freedom completely.
For the adhesive I went with GhostBond XL.
I've used tape on holidays before, including a trip to Cairns and a trip to Greece in similar heat, and glue won that comparison convincingly. Here's the reason: when you swim and then cool down, glue has the ability to reset and re-grip as the temperature changes. Tape doesn't do that as well. Once it starts to breakdown and lift in heat and water, it keeps lifting. Glue is the better choice for any trip involving serious swimming.
For application I used three thin coats on the scalp and two thin coats on the system itself. Each coat went on fully tacky before the next, no rushing it. This gives you a denser, more moisture-resistant bond than a single thick coat ever will. In humid conditions, the extra few minutes of patience here pays dividends across the entire trip.
What I packed - the minimal hair system kit for travel
I travel light with a hair system kit. The goal is to have what I need for a touch-up or a clean, and absolutely nothing more. Taking your entire maintenance setup on holiday adds bulk, creates anxiety at customs, and usually means most of it stays unused in the bathroom anyway.
Here's what came with me and whether I actually used it:
|
Item |
What it's for |
Used it? |
|
UV spray leave-in conditioner |
Protect and hydrate hair from sun and pool |
Yes - every day |
|
GhostBond Touch-Up Pen |
Quick perimeter re-bond without a full kit |
Yes - day 4 touch-up |
|
Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) |
Clean the scalp before touch-up adhesive |
Yes - day 4 touch-up |
|
Microfibre cloth |
Wipe down old adhesive cleanly |
Yes - day 4 touch-up |
|
Quality brush |
Style and manage hair during the trip |
Daily |
|
Backup tape strips |
Emergency perimeter bond if glue failed |
Not needed |
|
Hat |
Absolute worst-case backup plan |
Not needed |
|
The hat was the safety net I never opened. If everything had gone completely wrong, I could have worn it and nobody would have known anything was different. Having that backup option eliminates the anxiety of "what if" even if you never need it. |
The actual holiday - what the system went through
The honest summary: pool in the morning, wander around for food, beach club in the afternoon for sunset drinks, and repeat. Exactly what a family holiday with young kids looks like when you find a formula that works and stick to it.
The heat was consistent sitting at 35 degrees through most of the trip with the humidity that comes with Bali in the warmer months. I was swimming multiple times a day, walking everywhere in full sun, and deliberately not wearing a hat because I wanted to see how the colour held up under UV exposure over several days.
The answer on colour: it faded very slightly by the end of the trip, which was entirely expected for an older system under sustained tropical sun. Nothing dramatic, nothing anyone noticed, just the natural effect of UV on hair that's been out in the elements for a few months already. For a newer system in better condition, UV spray leave-in conditioner applied daily would slow this down significantly.
How the bond actually held - the honest timeline
Days 1 through 3: nothing. Solid as the day it went on. Multiple swims, sweating through the afternoon heat, wandering around for dinner in the evening. The bond didn't move.
Day 4 is where it got interesting and honestly, this is where the trip became the best real-world test I could have designed. We spent the morning trekking around the area, which meant heat, sweat, and sustained physical effort in direct sun. Then, back at the pool, I spent a solid hour teaching my oldest to dive in properly. That combination of trekking, diving, repeated full submersion, is about as demanding as you can get.
The bond lifted at the hairline. A small section, but enough that I wanted to address it before the evening adventure.
The day 4 touch-up - exactly what I did
This is the part I want to walk through carefully because it's the thing most wearers are anxious about when they travel. What do you actually do when something needs attention and you're not at home with your full kit?
The answer is simpler than you'd think.
I used my microfibre cloth to clean the old adhesive off the hairline and scalp, just the area that had lifted, not a full removal. Once that was clean, I applied a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to the area and let it dry completely. This gives the fresh adhesive a clean, residue-free surface to bond to.
Then I applied one thin coat of GhostBond from my touch-up pen to the first centimetre or so of the system and the corresponding scalp area. Let it reach full tack, I stood under the aircon while this dried to avoid sweating, pressed it down firmly, held it for thirty seconds.
That was it. Five minutes in the villa bathroom. The bond held for another three days without any further attention, through more swims, more walking, the beach clubs, and the flight home. I am writing this 4 days after landing and still wearing the same system with the same bond and the same touch-up!

The touch-up pen makes this kind of repair genuinely easy on holiday. Precise application, no mess, fits in any toiletry bag. |
The part I think about most
At no point during 6 days in Bali did anyone, my family, not strangers at the beach clubs, not anyone I walked past or sat near, say a single word about my hair. Not a glance, not a double-take, nothing.
And that was exactly the point.
I was just a dad on holiday with his kids. Eating too much, finding the best spot for sunset drinks, teaching a small person to dive into a pool, getting mildly sunburned. The hair system was the last thing on anyone's mind, including mine, for most of the trip.
That's what a good system, a good haircut and a solid routine gives you. Not perfection - the bond lifted on day 4, and that's fine and TOTALLY expected. It gives you the freedom to just be there, in the moment, without it being a thing you're managing or worrying about.
What I took away from the trip - the actual lessons
1. Apply 2 days before you fly, not the night before
Give the bond time to cure before it meets tropical heat. This single decision probably added days to my hold duration.
2. Use glue, not tape for hot and humid destinations
Glue resets as temperatures change. Tape tends to keep going once it starts to lift. For Bali, Cairns, Darwin, or anywhere else that delivers serious heat and humidity, adhesive is the better call. GhostBond XL was the right choice here.
3. Use your older system - take the pressure off yourself
If you have a system that's getting towards the end of its life but is still in decent shape, this is the trip to use it on. The mental freedom of not worrying about damaging it is genuinely worth more than the cost difference between systems.
4. Thin poly works fine in tropical heat
0.04mm is thin enough to breathe reasonably well even in Bali conditions. Thick poly would have been uncomfortable. If you're travelling somewhere hot and considering a poly system, go as thin as you can.
5. Rinse with fresh water after every swim
Salt water and chlorine both degrade the bond and dry out the hair over time. A quick fresh water rinse after every swim costs you thirty seconds and makes a real difference across a five-day trip.
6. Apply leave-in conditioner daily
UV spray leave-in conditioner every morning before you head out protects the hair from sun damage and keeps it manageable in the humidity. The hair on a system doesn't get the scalp's natural oils, it needs the help.
7. Pack a minimal kit and trust it
Touch-up pen, microfibre cloth, alcohol, UV leave-in, a good brush, and backup tape you'll probably never need. That's it. You don't need your whole bathroom on holiday.
8. Nobody notices - just enjoy the trip
Six days. Dozens of strangers. Not a single comment. The person most aware of your hair system is always you. Once you accept that, you can just be on holiday.
The short version
Bali with a hair system: absolutely fine. Better than fine, actually. Apply early, use quality glue, use your older system, pack light, rinse after swimming, conditioner every day, and then forget about it and enjoy yourself.
If you're planning a trip somewhere hot and you're nervous about how your system will hold up, this is me telling you from the other side of it that you'll be okay. The routine becomes second nature fast, and the peace of mind you get from a proper setup is absolutely worth it.
