FAQ's Getting Started
A hair system is a non-surgical hair replacement solution. A
hairpiece made from real or synthetic hair on a lace, polyurethane (poly), or
mono base that is bonded to the scalp using medical-grade adhesive or tape.
Modern hair systems are significantly more natural-looking and comfortable than
older toupees and can be worn continuously for weeks at a time.
The hair system itself typically costs between $200–$800 depending
on the base type, hair quality, and whether it is a stock or custom piece.
Ongoing costs include adhesives and maintenance products. Most wearers spend
$50–$150 per month. This makes it significantly more affordable than a hair
transplant ($8,000–$25,000+) and a cost-effective long-term solution.
A properly fitted, colour/density matched and well-maintained hair system is genuinely undetectable to most people in most situations. The hairline and bond
maintenance are the two most important factors. A lace front system creates a
natural, soft hairline. Keeping the bond fresh and the system well-maintained
keeps the overall appearance natural. Strangers almost never notice.
Neither is universally better - they suit different situations. A hair transplant is surgical, permanent, and works best for
limited hair loss with good donor hair. A hair system is non-surgical, immediate, and works regardless of how much hair loss has occurred. Many men try a hair system first; others use them while deciding about surgery.
Not necessarily, but it depends on the degree of hair loss. Wearers with significant thinning or baldness in the bonded area typically shave the area smooth for the best bond and most natural look. Wearers with
partial thinning can sometimes integrate a partial system without shaving. A
hair professional who works with systems can advise on the best approach for
your specific situation.
FAQ's Adhesives & Bonding
For most Australian wearers, GhostBond XL is the best all-round starting point — strong, water-based, and reliable in everyday
conditions. For wearers in hot or humid climates (QLD, NT, coastal areas) or
with active lifestyles, GhostBond Platinum is the specialist formula for sweat
resistance. Walker Tape adhesives are excellent for cooler conditions and long
maximum hold.
Both work well and many wearers use a combination. Tape is easier to apply, more predictable for beginners, and typically quicker to remove. Glue (brush-on adhesive) often provides a longer hold duration and more flexibility in coverage. Most beginners start with tape and some move to glue as they develop their routine. Others prefer tape long-term.
Most adhesives provide 1–4 weeks of hold depending on the
formula, your scalp type, climate, and activity level. Australian summer and
active lifestyles shorten bond duration; cooler conditions extend it.
Water-based adhesives like GhostBond Platinum handle Australian heat better than
acrylic-based alternatives. See our honest adhesive duration guide for a full
breakdown.
GhostBond Platinum is specifically formulated for heavy
perspiration and oily scalps. It is the adhesive I wear personally
through Australian summers. Pair it with No Sweat Scalp Protector or Max Hold
Sport Scalp Protector for maximum sweat resistance during activity.
Lets be honest - lifts happen and there is no 'perfect' bond that wont ever lift. The most common causes are: insufficient scalp cleaning before
application (residue from the previous bond), no scalp protector, applying to a
slightly damp scalp, or an adhesive that is not matched to your scalp type.
Oily scalps in particular need GhostBond Platinum rather than a standard
formula. See our troubleshooting blog post for a full checklist.
In Australian conditions, particularly in summer or for active wearers - yes. A scalp protector creates a moisture barrier between your skin and the adhesive, which significantly extends bond life by reducing the impact of sweat and scalp oils. It takes 1–2 minutes to apply and dry.
GhostBond Scalp Protector and Walker Tape Scalp Protector are both excellent as do-it-all options.
FAQ's Maintenance & Care
Apply an adhesive solvent (Walker Tape C22 or GhostBuster Remover) to the bond edge and wait 30–60 seconds for it to soften. Lift slowly from the edge - never pull against resistance. Apply more solvent to any remaining residue, work in gently, and wipe away. Follow with Bond Breaker
Shampoo to remove all residue. Never rush removal. See our full removal guide.
Yes - showering with the system on is normal and recommended.
Daily removal and reapplication damages the system far more than regular
showering. Use a hair system-safe shampoo like Pro Series Shampoo, rinse in
lukewarm water, and pat dry gently rather than rubbing. Try to limit actual shampooing and use a good moisturising conditioner wehn possible.
Yes. Most wearers, myself included, sleep with their system on every night. A satin or silk pillowcase reduces friction and is gentler on both the hair and the bond. A fresh bond should be worn carefully on the first night to allow full cure, but after that, normal sleep is fine.
Yes, with the right adhesive and preparation. GhostBond Platinum is the most water-resistant formula on the market. Use a scalp protector before application, and rinse with fresh water immediately after pool or ocean swimming. Regular swimming
will shorten your bond cycle and system lifespan - adjust maintenance accordingly.
Most wearers do a full removal, clean, and reapplication every
1–4 weeks depending on the adhesive formula, scalp type, climate, and
lifestyle. In Australian summer or with an active lifestyle, expect the shorter
end of that range. Setting a consistent maintenance schedule is more important
than the exact frequency.
By the end of it's life, the hair system will have built up residue, skin, sweat etc - Elimin8 Odour Eliminator Spray by Professional Hair Labs is
designed specifically for this. It neutralises odour rather than masking it
with heavy fragrance. A light spray daily or between washes keeps the system
smelling fresh. Addressing the source of odour (sweat, adhesive residue) with
good maintenance is the long-term fix.
FAQ's Lifestyle
Yes. BUT, expect a shorter bond cycle. A solid bond and prep using GhostBond Platinum combined with Max Hold Sport Scalp Protector handles gym sessions, sport, and heavy exercise well. The
antiperspirant formula of Max Hold Sport actively reduces scalp perspiration
rather than just creating a barrier over it. Most active wearers find this
combination handles their training without issue.
Yes - hair systems made from human hair can be cut, styled, and even coloured (though colouring should be done carefully and ideally by a professional). Synthetic hair systems cannot be heat-styled. A stylist who is experienced with hair systems can blend the system with your natural hair for
the most natural result. The cut and blend is one of the most important
factors in how natural a system looks.
Most of the hair system community agrees: earlier is better than later, and the conversation is almost always less significant than the anxiety building up to it. Partners who are told before they notice are
generally supportive. Waiting until they discover it themselves can make the
concealment feel more significant than the system itself. 99.9% of the time, they wont care and will be supportive of the decision.
When properly applied and removed with the correct technique
and solvents, hair systems should not damage the natural hair growing at the
sides. The adhesive is applied to the scalp (shaved area), not to existing
hair. Improper removal, particularly pulling without adequate solvent, can
irritate the scalp, so using the right removal products and technique is
important.
Yes. A properly bonded hair system travels exactly as you do. It is worn continuously. Carry your maintenance kit in your luggage (solvents count as liquids for air travel so check quantities). Long-haul flights can be
dry environments, a leave-in conditioner spray helps keep the hair hydrated.
If you are going somewhere significantly hotter or more humid than usual,
consider adjusting your adhesive choice.
