Hair System Maintenance for Barbers and Salon Professionals: A Practical Guide

More Australian barbers and salons are adding hair systems to their service menu and for good reason. The recurring maintenance cycle creates predictable, loyal clientele, and the product category is growing as the stigma around hair systems continues to fade.

 

If you are a barber or salon professional setting up a hair system service, this guide covers the products, techniques, and workflow that make client sessions efficient and the results consistent.

 

Why hair system maintenance is a strong service addition

A client who wears a hair system needs maintenance every 1–4 weeks depending on their adhesive, scalp type, and lifestyle. That is a regular, predictable appointment that fills your schedule and builds a deeply loyal client relationship. Once a client trusts you with their hair system, they rarely go elsewhere.

 

The technical skills involved such as adhesive application, removal, scalp preparation  are learnable with practice and the right product knowledge. You do not need specialist training to offer this service, but understanding the products and their differences is essential.

 

The professional maintenance workflow

 

Step 1: Removal

Begin every maintenance session with proper adhesive removal. Apply the adhesive remover, for exampe Walker Tape C22 Solvent to the broken down bond, allow 30–60 seconds for the adhesive to loosen, then lift the hair system gently from the edge. Work around the perimeter rather than lifting straight up.

 

For high-volume sessions, Rapid Release Spray is worth using (only on the system - never the skin) its faster-acting formula reduces the clean-up time. C22 remains the more versatile remover for scalp and system residue cleanup.

 

Step 2: Scalp and system cleaning

Once the system is removed, clean residue from both the scalp and the system base. Apply solvent to any residue remaining on the scalp, work in gently, and wipe clean using cotton balls, as they absorb the solvent as well as make the residue easier to collect by bunching it together. Then clean the base of the hair system with microfibre cloth - this reduces the risk of cotton getting stuck in the hair system and it a lot kinder to the base. If there is still a sticky feeling after all of this, use a small amount or remover and rub the specific areas and rinse throughly.

 

Follow with Walker Tape Bond Breaker Shampoo on the scalp, this removes remaining solvent and adhesive residue thoroughly, leaving the scalp clean and ready for fresh adhesive. 

 

Step 3: Inspect the system

With the system removed and cleaned, inspect the base for wear, fraying, or damage. Check knot integrity on lace systems and if shedding is increasing, apply Top-Loc Knot Sealer to the inside of the lace base before reapplication. Early intervention extends system life significantly and saves your client money.

 

Step 4: Scalp prep before reapplication

After shaving down the attachment area, apply a good Scalp Protector to the clean, dry scalp before adhesive. this adds a layer of protection between the scalp and bond to decrease irritation and prolong the bond. I persoanlly use Max Hold Sport by Walker Tape as I am quite active and constantly chasing after the kids. Allow to dry completely before moving on to the next step. 

 

Step 5: Adhesive application

Choose the right adhesive for each client's scalp type, lifestyle, and climate. As a professional, stocking two or three adhesives covers most client needs:

•       GhostBond (any of the range) - the reliable all-rounder for most clients. 

•       Ultra Hold Glue - acrylic based and tends to hold longer and stronger than water based glue

•       Walker Tape (long, mid and short hold) - having options comes in handy as not every client is the same and some prefer a daily/weekly hold over a 3-4 week hold. Also, giving options shows that you aren't a one trick pony and may know your stuff!

 

Note: Apply adhesive in thin, even coats. Allow each coat to reach the right tack level before applying the next. This creates a stronger more even bond.
